In an attempt to improving my writing skills, I go to a weekly writing circle. For me this is mostly just for fun with the hope that somehow, by osmosis, I can become a better writer and have something of value to offer on this Blog. We often get weekly assignments, and sometimes I don’t do the homework… OK I admit it, I usually don’t do my homework. Let’s just call it a mental block. There is something about the word “Home Work” that I just don’t like…. I didn’t like it when I was a kid either and would go to any length to avoid it at all costs, dragging it out for hours by retreating into my imaginary world. I did manage to make it though school even though my report cards often had “Day dreams in class too much” in the comment section. My friend Chris always does her homework. She is there every Friday, eager to share what she has written with the group…. Last week she came to class, assignment in hand, of course, and I had to laugh at the way she managed to complete the weekly task in spite of temporarily feeling uninspired! (If you click on the picture you can read it.) I guess it’s true; sometimes just getting down to business is really all it takes…. I’ll leave you with this quote by Chuck Close: “The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work.”

Daydreaming is a useful tool. It lets your mind relax and play with your sub-conscious. Enjoy!
I agree Patricia. I however, have the ability to take it to the extreme until I can’t get anything else done at all… It’s at this point that I need to just roll up my sleeves and get to work.
Great advice! Love Chris’s story! I don’t always do my homework either but I am trying to just show up, be in the moment, leave my cranky old self critic (I call her Gertrude) at home in the closet, and enter into a state of fun, friendship and creativity that awaits me if I just come out and play with my heart wide open! Thanks for the reminder Marnie, now excuse me, I’m going out to PLAY!
