I wanted to write about my inspiration for this piece, the Phoenix that rises from the ashes and how it represents overcoming difficult times in life but the truth is that sometimes life throws us a curve ball that just takes more endurance than we feel that we have inside of us. A very dear friend that lives across the country from me was recently diagnosed with not one, but three types of breast cancer. How unfair is that? I wish that there was more that I could do. I wish I didn’t live so far away so that I could go with her to every treatment and care for her while she recovers. I wish I could wave a magic wand and make it all go away…. Of course, I can’t do that. Finally, I decided to make a piece of jewelry that would serve as a reminder that she is strong, brave and very much loved by so many people, but what could it be that wouldn’t seem superficial in the face of the journey she is about to take into the realm of “cancer treatment”? What could embody the hopes and prayers I wished to make tangible? I don’t think this piece is adequate but it does carry with it an enormous amount of love and positive thoughts.

I can’t tell you how many times have I’ve asked myself that question (sarcastically) knowing full well the answer is……UM, NO!  Well, this year I decided to change that and actually expect the answer to be Oh YAAAAAaaaa!  So every week I take myself off to my friend Kaitlin’s for some artist play time, or take a day off where I don’t let myself  become distracted by studio gremlin’s, or I just go out for coffee with the girlfriends.

One of the fun things I did to start my year was at Kaitlin’s Creative Cottage.  (Find out more about classes here: http://thundermoonstudios.wordpress.com/) I took a class on making “aspirations” cards….. I was excited about this since I can’t really seem to keep resolutions.   I am happy to report that for the first two months of 2012, I am still committed to having more fun, getting more done, spending some time in the yard enjoying the sunshine, changing my perspective, deepening friendships, connecting with my family, learning new things, teaching new things, drink more water….. if I forget to do these things I just look in the box and pull out a card! Why not join me…… There isn’t a rule that says you can only make aspiration cards at the New Year!

Enter to Win these Silver Earrings!

Win these Earrings! It’s so easy….I promise!

I have had some people asking me about the inspire the muse contest I posted a few weeks ago at https://marnieismymuse.com/inspire-muse-win-fine-silver-earrings/ A few people have asked if they have to actually make the item that they submit for the contest and send in a picture……..No, that would be great but since I didn’t think of it, you only have to submit an idea.  Some of you want to know if you have to use all of the items in the picture and what the items are……. No, you can pick and choose which items you would use.  The items are: A pencil lead case with pencil lead for mechanical pencils, a tiny bird, a toothpick with a paper bead on it, a marble, a Jax toy, a mini clothes pin and a small bird, (It’s a fake bird, I know you will all be relieved to know that no actual birds were harmed in any way for this contest).  Most of you just want to know what the prize earrings look like….Now you know!

You still have a week to enter so put on your thinking caps and submit an idea or two!  I can’t wait to see what you come up with! And since I am new to blogging your odds of winning are SOOOOooooo much better than winning the lottery and you don’t even have to spend a buck!

The Writing Assignment by Chris Tucker

In an attempt to improving my writing skills, I go to a weekly writing circle. For me this is mostly just for fun with the hope that somehow, by osmosis, I can become a better writer and have something of value to offer on this Blog. We often get weekly assignments, and sometimes I don’t do the homework… OK I admit it, I usually don’t do my homework. Let’s just call it a mental block. There is something about the word “Home Work” that I just don’t like…. I didn’t like it when I was a kid either and would go to any length to avoid it at all costs, dragging it out for hours by retreating into my imaginary world. I did manage to make it though school even though my report cards often had “Day dreams in class too much” in the comment section. My friend Chris always does her homework. She is there every Friday, eager to share what she has written with the group…. Last week she came to class, assignment in hand, of course, and I had to laugh at the way she managed to complete the weekly task in spite of temporarily feeling uninspired! (If you click on the picture you can read it.) I guess it’s true; sometimes just getting down to business is really all it takes…. I’ll leave you with this quote by Chuck Close: “The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work.”

Tucson Gem Show 2012

Just a fraction of what's out there...Mind Boggling!

I’m talking about the Tucson Gem show of course! People always ask me which shows they should go to….so here are my favorite, open to the public shows, in no particular order of importance.

T.E.P. (Tucson Electric Park) Gem and Mineral Show, January 28-Feb 12, 2012.  Location: Kino sports complex, 2500 E. Ajo Way, Tucson AZ.  They are open from 10 AM- 6PM except on the last day they close early.  The reason I like this show is they have a little bit of everything, beads, loose stones, big rocks, fossils, tools and supplies and FREE parking!

The Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, Feb. 9-12, 2012. Location: Tucson Convention Center, 260 S. Church Street, Tucson AZ. 9 AM- 6 PM except for the 12th, when…they close early.  This show is all about education.  A great show to take kids.  Lots of things to learn for everyone about minerals and gemstones with special focus on Arizona.  There are also plenty of vendors for shopping and they even have drawings for free things!  You can find out more at www.tgms.org.

The Best Bead Show, Feb. 1-5, 2012. Kino Veteran’s Memorial Community Center, 2805 E. Ajo Way, Tucson (across from the T.E.P. ball park.) 10 AM- 6 PM except for the 5th….they close early…. Are you beginning to see a pattern here?  If you are looking for beads and beading supplies this is the show!  Also on Saturday, Feb.4  from 1-3 PM you can find my friend, Sharon Hessoun demonstrating at the Soft Flex Booth.  Check out her gorgeous “Red Flirt” design http://wp.me/p27TWN-2J.

To Bead True Blue, Jan. 29-Feb 3, and The Tucson Bead show Feb. 4-6, 2012.  The Doubletree Reid Park, 445 S. Alvernon Way, Tucson AZ. 10 AM- 6 PM. They don’t officially close early the last day but I wouldn’t take any chances! These shows are back to back in the same location.  Both shows feature high quality, juried artists.  These shows are not for bargain hunters but if you are looking for beautiful, hand crafted beads, fabrics, and components you will want to check out one or both of these shows!

I welcome any comments or questions you might have. ~Marnie

It’s time for the 2012 Tucson Gem show!  This show is one of the largest shows of its kind in the world…yes the entire world and it’s right in my back yard. (Doing the happy dance, I’ll be posting pictures soon…of the show, not the happy dance…) The Tucson gem show is actually many different shows with hundreds of vendors, that all come to town the end of January and beginning of February.  If this is your first time visiting Tucson during this fun and crazy, shop till you drop (and then get up and do it again for two – three weeks solid) extravaganza there are a few things I have learned that will help you survive!

1. Bring your credentials

Many of the shows require you to have a business license or tax ID  in a jewelry related field like a designer, a manufacturer, retail store that sells jewelry (so no, your Uncle Bob’s Sporting Goods store license won’t get you in to the hard-core shows). You will also want to bring business cards, address labels printed with your contact information and business license number, this will save you lots of time and a trip to urgent care for writer’s cramp.

2. Bring a light weight but sturdy backpack or a small rolling suitcase.

Your treasures will get heavy really quickly.  Plan ahead even if you think “you aren’t buying today”…trust me on this one… If you choose to bring a rolling suitcase PLEASE don’t leave it in the aisle…. I get inside those big tents filled with sparkling and shining gemstone and I am not looking down, I haven’t fallen over a suitcase yet but I’ve seen it happen and it’s not pretty!

3. Don’t forget the essentials

Coffee may be necessary after a day or two of power shopping but what you really need is WATER….Tucson is in the Desert, bring a refillable water bottle, you will get thirsty…. (This may show up as a head ache caused by dehydration.) Lip balm is your friend. Baby wipes or anti-bacterial wipes are indispensible. One last thing…. don’t forget to bring pain reliever and any medicine you might need, better to be safe than sorry!

4. Bring a list of “must haves”

Go through your inventory before heading to the show this way you can replace items you need and not over buy on things you might not need.  I can’t tell you how frustrating it is for me to get home with 2 millimeter silver tubing when what I need is 3mm! If you are looking for beads that match some you already have, string them on a stretchy bracelet so you can compare them at the show.

5. Budget

Know what you want to spend on your must haves and add some splurge money…. There is so much eye candy here that it’s soooooo easy to get carried away and blow your entire allocation in a few days.  Tally your totals at least at the end of every day.

6. Cash is King

For small purchases you will want to bring some cash.  Many vendors will not accept credit cards for under $100.  It’s also great to have some small bills to tip the shuttle bus drivers.

7. Click it and Zip it!

I like to bring a retractable sharpie marker so that I don’t have to keep track of a cap and I bring my own zip lock bags for stones and small findings.  Often vendors will bag the entire purchase in one large bag. By bagging items myself I can write notes on the cost of each item for inventory. I also add information about the names of stones and attributes the gem dealers share.

8. Dress for comfort.

Tucson is not known for being the fashion capital of the world. Not to say that we don’t have some pretty stylish individuals, but pretty much anything goes here most of the time. I have even seen people in shorts at weddings and funerals, and no one batted an eye, (God, I love it here.) Comfortable shoes and layered clothing will get you through chilly mornings, sunny afternoons and even a little rain if we are lucky (we need the rain)!

9. Pack a snack.

This is really important if you are shopping with what I call “power shoppers.”  Once they start gem show shopping they don’t stop…really, from the moment they open the doors until they lock them up they won’t stop to eat, converse, take a phone call…well you get the picture.  There are usually some type of food vendors but if you want something healthy, you had better bring it yourself….

9) Buy tools last.

Tools are heavy and they get even heavier as the day wears on. Scope out the tool vendors and make a list of the things you want and how much they cost so you can return at the end of the day or at least before you leave that show. Also look for free magazines. Remember to get them on your way out the door rather than on your way in. 🙂

10. Take a fun class

There are all types of jewelry related classes and activities scheduled during the gem show from how to make jewelry, to photographing your jewelry or even jewelry business classes. Do an online search for the type of class you are interested in and sign up.  I will be teaching metal clay classes in my studio www.goodmusedesigns.com! I hope you will join me for a fun, easy afternoon. I can show my tips and tricks and you can create something wonderful in Metal clay.

Rock My World ring

I’m talking about creator’s block,,, kind of like writer’s block except it’s about creating tangible “things” rather than creating using words.  I often suffer from creator’s block….not creativity block where I can’t think up ideas, that is a different can of worms all together, but the actual act of getting into the studio and executing those ideas.  I can come up with a million things to do instead,,, computer work, marketing, business stuff, housework, and then there are the excuses,,,, I don’t want to mess up the studio because I have students coming, I don’t have enough time before my dear husband gets here, I work better at night, I can’t concentrate because the @##$% (insert swear word of your choice here!) Dogs next door are barking….well you get the idea…

I’ve been talking to lots of artists about the “just do it” of making art and here are the top 5 ways to make art happen, in other words, how to chip away at the old block!

1)      Do it with a friend… ask a fellow artist to join you in the studio for a work session.

2)      Be accountable… join a group, ask a friend or family member to nag you, create a challenge  like a piece a week posted to your web site or flicker photos and ask others to participate.

3)      Take an ongoing class or even a one-time workshop in your medium or even in something totally unrelated to get you going.

4)      Set up designated work times and stay away from the phone, computer, etc. during these times…then stick to it!

5)      Reward yourself for working.  This is really important for those of us that work for ourselves because we often don’t see an actual pay check from week to week for specific hours worked.  (My reward goes something like this… if you finish ABC, LMNOP and XYZ by Thursday at 11:59 PM, then you can go play at the Creative Cottage on Friday!)

I hope this helps you all get started creating lot’s more art in 2012…. If you have any other great ideas on how to make more art, please leave a comment with your suggestions!

The New Year is here and I wanted to share a few of my intentions with you for upping my creativity and reducing artists block.

1.  Just get into the studio and start working…. Don’t wait for inspiration, jump right in and pretty soon art will appear.  If you don’t feel especially creative do the busy work like brushing gesso on canvases if you paint, flipping through your old sketch books, or taking your camera out and clicking a few shots of whatever….  So 2012 is my year to make more jewelry in my studio and clean it less.  My students are awesome…they won’t mind.

2. Take on only new obligations that make you happy. JUST SAY NO to things that drain you of every good thing and give back little to no reward.  (If you have a day job the reward in that is a paycheck or health insurance so that isn’t what I’m talking about here…)  I vow to choose my obligations wisely!

3. Take out the trash… I’m not talking about the stuff piling up in the can, although getting rid of that helps too… I’m referring to the mental garbage that is weighing you down so that there isn’t a place for creativity.  This might be the little voice in your head that tells you all the reasons why you can’t do something, or the committee you agreed to head up or whatever…This year no matter how hard it is I am going to take 3 giant steps out of my comfort zone, put my fingers in my ears and tell the voice inside my head “na,na, na, na…I can’t hear you!”

4. Do something FUN as often as possible.  This is really important if you work from home!  Schedule an outing once a week or at the very least plan on doing something at home that is out of the ordinary and enjoyable.  I spend my Friday’s with friends that make me laugh. We make art or in my case I doodle while we chat.  (Ok if you must know I hang out at Kaitlin’s Creative Cottage.  http://thundermoonstudios.wordpress.com/kaitlins-creative-cottage-classes/)

5. And finally, this year I am going to put some healthy food in my body and add bit more movement ….no I am not giving up anything like chocolate or coffee… I am just going to add a few more vegetables into the mix and take my old dog Kobe out for a few adventures…. I have been told that this will make me much more creative…. time will tell 😉

The earrings pictured above are from the E-Z, Artsy Earring class I am doing through Groupon and they are made from pennies….just my 2 cents worth!
